Smelt is a small fish distantly related to the salmon family, which has a shape similar to a small salmon. They live in both fresh and saltwater. They have an olive colored back with silver streaks along its side. It is a very prolific fish and it almost always travels in large schools. They are abundant in the great lakes region. when they are very fresh they have a peculiar smell, resembling a sliced cucumber.
